Tons of Waste Coal Removed (1991-2016)

Overview

Ebensburg Power Company is a 50-megawatt waste coal plant constructed in 1991. The plant utilizes Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) combustion technology to force hot air and limestone into the boiler to burn low quality refuse coal mined from abandoned piles located throughout Western Pennsylvania. The limestone in the boiler captures sulfur dioxide emissions in a controlled fashion rather than the free release that occurs over time when refuse piles spontaneously combust at the mine sites.  The combustion in CFB boilers also occurs at a much lower temperature, which greatly reduces NOx emissions as well to give this technology significant environmental advantage over traditional solid fuel plants.

Since commercial operations began in 1991, Ebensburg Power Company has consumed over 11 million tons of waste coal from abandoned mine sites that dot the Pennsylvania landscape. The facility’s access to an abundant fuel source allows it to be a competitive source of power generation for the PJM region while cleaning up the surrounding landscape and producing enough energy to power over 40,000 homes.
