Overview

Sunbury Generation operated a four unit, 400-MW coal-fired power plant located in Shamokin Dam, Pennsylvania. Units 1 and 2 were commissioned in 1949, Unit 3 in 1951 and Unit 4 in 1953. The Sunbury station shuttered coal-fired operations in March of 2014 and was officially deactivated in July of that same year. Sunbury Generation continues to operate as a 41MW peaker plant with 36MW of #2 oil-fired combustion turbine generation and 5MW of diesel driven generation.

The Sunbury Generation site is now being redeveloped for industrial use as a Pennsylvania Keystone Opportunity Expansion Zone (KOEZ). KOEZs are specific geographic areas that provide state and local tax benefits in an effort to revive economically depressed regions. According to the PA Department of Community and Economic Development, KOEZs have created almost 10,000 jobs and have led to over $1.5 billion in private capital investments. The Sunbury site has since been chosen as the location of the new 1,129 MW Panda Hummel combined-cycle natural gas power plant, with other potential projects currently being discussed.
